Broadmoor Hospital secured by innovative temporary fencing

Hospital fencing similar to that for Broadmoor secure temporary fencingHigh-security fencing expert Binns Fencing has been appointed to provide a temporary secure perimeter as part of the enabling works for the redevelopment of Broadmoor Hospital.

West London Mental Health NHS Trust announced the £242m redevelopment of the high-security psychiatric hospital in Crowthorne after receiving government approval.

The project is to build 10 new wards within the existing estate, alongside the six modern wards located in the Paddock Centre, to create a modern, safe and secure setting to facilitate outstanding clinical and therapeutic care. The trust has appointed Keir as the main contractor to transform the 150-year-old hospital, which instructed renowned secure institution provider Binns for the fencing.

Binns has designed a temporary 5.2m high ‘prison standard security fence with steel sheeting alongside Zaun, based on its temporary MultiFence security system developed especially for the London 2012 Olympics.

Binns MD Adam Binns said: ‘We have developed this temporary solution with no below-ground fixings to enable construction work properly to kick off as soon as possible in a secure and safe environment for patients, construction workers and the public alike – and for it to be removed once work is completed.’

The fence line includes Zaun’s HiSec security panels with the popular ‘358’ welded mesh configuration. In addition, post clamps are mounted in receiving fixings that are actually cast into the concrete block, resulting in an incredibly robust fence line.

On average, patients stay at Broadmoor for five years. The redevelopment, which will be ready to take patients from the beginning of 2017, will help ensure that during this time, staff can provide them with the best possible treatments in surroundings that support therapy, encourage recovery and achieve the most effective outcomes.
