Types of fence toppings and their uses

Security fencing toppings are a key factor to consider when protecting your premises. While security might be their main feature, fence toppings also serve an aesthetic purpose. Aside from this, fence toppings are recommended for fences that are generally higher than 2m for the prevention of injuries to members of the public.

Below we explore some of the types of fence toppings and their uses.

1. Anti-climb fence topping

With its main intent as deterring potential intruders from accessing your premises, the anti-climb fence topping serves as a non-injurious security measure. The fence topping is designed with rotating spikes that spin around. This serves as a safe security measure while still enhancing security, as well as complying with the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1957 and Liability Act 1984. The caution sign should, however, be installed to serve as a warning.

2. Barbed wire fence topping

The barbed wire fence security topping is constructed using steel where sharp edges are installed along the strands. Ideal with perimeter fencing, the barbed wire toppings can also be used as fences to secure properties in agricultural settings or for commercial and domestic use.

3. Electric fence topping

The electric fence topping is a non-lethal electric shock barrier that acts as a powerful deterrent to any potential intruder or trespasser. As a fully monitored fence topping with danger warning signs installed on it, it is used in combination with other sophisticated electronic devices such as CCTV. This serves as an alert system of any attempted intrusion. The fence topping is mainly installed in high-security areas such as international airports, industrial sites and so on.

4. Spike strips fencing

Fitted rigidly on top of walls or gates, the spike strip fence topping is designed with spikes that cause discomfort to anyone who attempts to intrude the property. They either come with bolts or welded metal strips that are pre-mounted or mounted after the perimeter fence installation, making climbing impossible. It is again advisable to install the security spike strips topping on to heights over 2m to avoid injury to any passersby.
