MUGA ensures more lungfuls of inspiration at Surrey school

A Surrey prep school that offers pupils ‘lungfuls of inspiration’ has transformed its sports provision with a new all-weather multi-use games area (MUGA).

Hazelwood Prep School and Nursery for boys and girls from six months to 13 years in Limpsfield near Oxted in Surrey have further invested in its facilities, including an art studio with a kiln, sports hall, extensive playing fields and a ‘classroom in the trees’.

The pupils’ school motto is spiritu inspiratus, which translates as ‘lungfuls of inspiration’. Children are given the space to breathe and discover and develop their own unique talents.

Hazelwood commissioned Maidstone family business Sovereign Sports to install the MUGA. They are specialists in the construction of all-weather sports courts to SAPCA and LTA standards for schools, tennis clubs, local councils, sports clubs and private homes, predominantly in the South East of England.

Sovereign designed the new-build MUGA primarily for tennis and netball, but with a couple of recessed goals and additional recesses to store cricket equipment.

They turned to steel fencing manufacturer Zaun for the only mesh system in the UK designed specifically for tennis courts, with a Super Rebound option that allows the court to stage many other games.

Zaun’s Advantage Tennis mesh eliminates many of the downsides of traditional tennis chain link fencing, which deforms over time and is easy to cut, disfigure and vandalise.

By contrast, Zaun’s mesh can withstand heavy use while allowing easy viewing of the on-court action. In addition, it uses a 200mm x 40mm twin wire mesh that is small enough to prevent tennis balls from passing through, thus improving gameplay and ball retention.

Sovereign chose 3m-high Duo8 Super Rebound twin horizontal wire fencing panels from Zaun, which are highly durable, low maintenance, ‘graffiti proof and offered great rebound properties similar to a wall.
