St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Romford opened their brand new multi-use games area (MUGA) to provide its students with an outdoor space to host sporting activities without being impeded by poor weather.

The Voluntary Aided School, which forms part of the Diocese of Brentwood, worked with the renowned architectural firm, Munday + Cramer (M+C), to create a cost-effective multi-use games area to replace their existing playing fields. In an urban environment with limited outdoor space, the school required an area with an effective drainage system that could provide sporting facilities all year round.

Multi-use games areas are becoming increasingly popular with schools across the UK due to their versatility and durability. MUGAs can be used for a wide range of sporting activities, including, but not limited to, football, netball, hockey and basketball.

MUGAs are designed with artificial surfacing and a free drainage system, so they won’t sustain any damage as a result of constant footfall, flooding or mud. With minimal maintenance requirements, unlimited flexibility and a wide range of additional features available, multi-use gaming areas have become a worthy investment for many urban school districts.

The works were carried out during term-time and enabled the school to open the MUGA for use during the summer term. They chose the state-of-the-art fencing system from the experts at Zaun, using a combination of Duo Sports double wire sports fencing system and their Super Rebound Fencing system to create a robust and long-lasting perimeter that would last for many years with regular cleaning and maintenance.

Zaun’s Duo Sports double wire fencing system is made with a strong, impact and vandal-resistant mesh to prevent any noise caused by rattling. This high-quality, sturdy fencing system also features EPDM rubber inserts and a clamp bar configuration for quick and easy installation, while professional-grade security fixings prevent damage caused by vandalism.

Zaun’s Super Rebound fencing system is part of Zaun’s Duo Sports twin wire sport fencing range and is designed specifically for sports premises that undergo regular or professional use. The double-layered wires ensure that any impact caused by sporting equipment is absorbed to prevent damage, while its special protective zinc coating ensures that the fencing will last up to 20 years.
