A £6 million sports complex built on a former hospital site in Caerphilly opened for business with sports and perimeter fencing and handrails from Zaun.

The former Ystrad Mynach Hospital site was transformed into a stunning sports hub that both professional and community teams use.

Final landscaping work completed at the Ystrad Mynach Sports Complex, developed with support from Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Welsh Rugby Union, Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff City FC.

The Dragons’ training base is now the home training centre of the Dragons. It boasts artificial and grass pitches for football and rugby, floodlights and stands, and a purpose-built training base with a weights room, indoor lineout training facilities and office space.

Caerphilly councillor Dave Poole said at the opening: “I am looking forward to seeing local teams and emerging talent rubbing shoulders with the professional rugby and football players of Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff City FC.”

Dragons chief executive Dr Chris Brown added: “We are delighted to have this state of the art facility available to our region. It means for the first time, we have a 3G pitch available exclusively for ourselves to train on, plus the gym and medical facilities. This will make a big difference, particularly in the depths of winter.”

Zaun supplied sports & security fencing contractors AlphaFence with over one kilometre of fencing and handrails. They installed over 600 metres of 5m high fencing, some with 1.5m sheet steel panels at the bottom and some with an additional 3m of netting on top, plus more than 400m of spectator railings.
