How to reduce the risks associated with electrified fencing

Many consumer-facing businesses (such as retail outlets) are reluctant to utilise electric fencing. This is perfectly understandable, as it may project an unwelcoming image, and it can be hazardous to customers if it is not deployed with sufficient care. However, it is one of the most effective forms of security fencing because it can repel prospective intruders with instant, unavoidable and painful electric shocks. For some high-profile businesses that need to establish highly secure perimeters, electrified fencing can be a necessary investment.

If you consider investing in electrified fencing for your business, you should be aware that you can deploy it without endangering your customers or projecting a negative image. In fact, we at Zaun have come up with several simple tips to help you avoid these pitfalls.

1. Utilise electrified security fencing at the back of your premises, not the front

Many criminals and intruders will attempt to gain entry to your business premises via the back of the building. It is, therefore, worth deploying electrified fencing at the rear of your premises. However, you should avoid placing it at the front because this is the part of your building that customers will see and gain entrance. You can deploy alternative security measures at the front of your building that customers will find less off-putting. We recommend using CCTV and alarm systems coupled with mesh cladding, armoured shutters or other protective measures to cover entry points. You can also place stylish but effective security railing (available here at Zaun) around the front of your perimeter.

2. Add another layer of security fencing

If the back of your building is highly accessible to the public, you may wish to add a secondary layer of security fencing around your electrified fencing to prevent ordinary people from touching it accidentally. Note that the electrified fencing will still be necessary to prevent determined intruders.

3. Only switch on your electrified fencing when your business is closed

While there are personnel on your property, there’s no need to activate your electrified fencing. Simply put, most criminals won’t try to break into a building while it is still heavily populated. Consequently, you can leave your electrified security fencing off during business hours to minimise the risk of accidents. However, when your business closes for the night, you should ensure that your fencing is activated so that it can repel intruders.

4. Provide clear warning signs

Just in case a customer or member of staff wanders too near your electrified security fencing, you should provide obvious warning signs to prevent them from touching it. This should significantly reduce the risk of collisions with your electrified fencing.

By following these tips, you can deploy electrified fencing without risking the safety of your staff or your customers, or your reputation.
